Holocaust Memorial in Romaina
From Edgar Hauster
Following your post, please let me inform you that I have been there at the inauguration (actually being in Radautz) and released a new post on my blog: http://hauster.blogspot.com/2009/10/holocaust-und-okologie.html
I’ve translated [my] post (after a fashion) to English, stipulating that it may be interesting for our group too:
(Bucharest, 09.10.09) Every year, starting in 2004, Romania commemorates on each 9. October the Holocaust Rememberance Day. Under the responsability of the regime of Ion Antonescu, a Romanian copy of Benito Mussolini, about 300,000 Jews and 11,000 Roma have been brutally killed. That has been proved inter alia by the Wiesel Commission, which released it’s Final Report regarding the Romanian Holocaist at the end of the year 2004. Yesterday, in the presence of Traian Basescu, President of Romania, the Holocaust Memorial has been inaugurated in the city center of Bucharest. The newly discovered historical conscience of the Romanian decision makers is confronted by the even newly discovered ecological conscience. After publisizing that for the erection of the memorial for the predominantly Jewish victims of the Holocaust, several trees had to be cut down, a vast number of - partly completely unknown - enviromental associations came up to the scene, agitating vehemently against the erection of the memeorial. It’s strange, but none of these associations raised it’s hands when spacious public green spaces have been digged in order to erect a large number of new office buildings. But how? Many of the so engaged new environmentalists springed up as (toxic) mushroom at the very moment of protesting against the Holocaust Memorial.
No surprise that the completion of the memorial has been delayed and one day before the opening ceremony there took place building, cleaning and exercising activities in order to avoid a disgrace in anticipation of the Holocaust Rememberance Day.
Please find enclosed my pictures from the memorial site and feel free to use them for the Ehpes.com Blog.
