I've been away from Chernivtsi for about a week, and just returned today.
All in all, there's a lot to digest from your accumulated emails. I was
delighted to learn that Hardy has created a slide show, but am unable to
view it on this computer. Later I'll take my laptop to a place where I can
plug it into the internet and view the show. I'm really looking forward to
it. I was also interested to read about a slide show someone created titled
"The Jews of Bukovina" and wonder where I can get a copy?

The comments inquiring about the technological capabilities of the
exhibition are well taken. I will get the specifics for you and report back
as soon as I can. I will also respond to Hardy's suggestion about the
categories for the various photos. Here in Ukraine business slows down from
the last week of December through the 14th of January, which is "Old New
Year's" under Russian Orthodox religion. I mention this because I have
hopes to be able to respond quickly, but fear my hopes may be thwarted by
the obstacle course of holidays ahead. I also will be away for 5 days at
the beginning of January.

My computer can hold fairly large files, so I'm okay with receiving picture
files at the appropriate time. Keeping in mind that downloads will be
slow, I would like to know in advance what people have, though. I suspect
the quantity of material may exceed what can be handled/pulled together
intelligently for the 600 year anniversary exhibit. I do know that Natalia
is especially interested in photos and artifacts relating to everyday life
in the community and such events as weddings, religious holidays, etc.

I'm happy to report that I viewed the space where the exhibition will be
housed. It is on the ground floor of the Jewish House, facing Teatralna
Plozha. It is not large, but has very high ceilings. It is vacant except
for a desk and some tall bookshelves along the walls which I believe Natalia
said are being removed. Natalia is anxious to begin the renovation. Before
visiting the space we went to an antique dealer in town so Natalia could
purchase a flat, blown glass bottle for the exhibit. Natalia said
it was made in Chernivtsi before WWII (it still has the paper sticker
identifying the manufacturer). It has a Star of David on the neck (or maybe
on one flat side, near the top; I don't recall), and Natalia said it is for
wine. There was another interesting item in the shop she said she was
interested in but I think she lacks funds for the purchase. Lastly, we went
to the University library, rare books room, to visit the librarian and look
at some drawings. Due to the language barrier (my Ukrainian is fairly
rudimentary) I'm a little unclear on what we were looking at, but I think
they were architectural drawings made by a Jewish architect who lived in
Chernivtsi and designed one or more of the historical buildings here.

Sincerely,
