Greetings,

I am well underway in constructing an online exhibition honoring the Jewish
presence that once existed in Czernowitz. Thanks to Jerome, Bruce and
several other native Czernowitzers, I have been able to have a reasonably
good start in this effort. However, I need your help. As Mimi has just
requested of the group for her proposed book, I can also use "your memoirs,
essays, letters, photographs and documents, related to your, or your
family's life in Czernowitz." There is no reason why you cannot send your
material to both of us; neither of us seek financial gain from our efforts
and wish only to do something worthwhile and virtuous. There is absolutely
no reason to feel that you have to choose to send material of us to one and
not the other. Certainly both our projects, though they may take different
forms, will be valuable in their own right. One will be able to visit my
online exhibition whenever one wishes; one will be able to purchase the book
that Mimi is creating and have a collection of material in a bound copy that
one will be able to read, treasure, learn from, share with other family
members, and hand down from one generation to the next.

There are advantages to what I myself am trying to accomplish. Many of you
who have visited my virtual museum website have seen proof that I am a
person who is creative, imaginative, and can get things done. My Czernowitz
online exhibition will be available to all online, not unlike our beloved
Czernowitz-L website. There will be no need to purchase anything at all, and
the exhibition may be added to whenever new material comes along. It will be
available not only to all of you on the Cz-list, but to anyone who might
happen to be searching on the internet for any type of material on
Czernowitz itself, or perhaps for a family name. This is certainly an
advantage of placing an exhibition on the internet--immediacy, open access
to a worldwide population (in this case, of Czernowitzers), maleability,
i.e. the opportunity to change or add to an exhibition whenever the occasion
calls for it. Lastly, there is little to no financial consideration to
constructing an online exhibition, i.e. one can use color graphics and
photography to one's heart's content; one needn't restrict oneself to
including only black and white material. There is also no real limit to the
amount of material that may be included, as the amount of space, even a
potentially large online exhibition as the one I will hopefully be
constructing, takes up relatively few megabytes, at least not enough to make
a dent in any website budget.

Saying this, for my plans to work optimally, there is a need for an effort
to be made on your part, at least for those of you who can make a
difference. I am again requesting from all of you who have material that
might be useful in constructing my online exhibition, to send me whatever
you have, by email or by some other means. Some of you have been quite
generous in your submission of material to me and this has been quite
helpful and encouraging; others have plainly suggested that they would send
material to me quite a while ago, and have not. This is, of course, quite
discouraging and disappointing. I am hoping that, by you sending me (and
Mimi) the material I need, you will show that you really do care about the
efforts being made, about preserving the history and memory of your family,
friends and ancestors who once lived in Czernowitz and helped to create a
beautiful Jewish past and presence there. This is certainly the time to step
up and support both Mimi and me in our worthwhile efforts. Who knows if such
opportunities will ever come again?

Best,
Steven Lasky
