[Cz-L] Surname

Dear Yehudit,
Engelberg is a surname that is found throughout Galicia and Bukowina. It is
 from two German words meaning angel and mountain and is an artificial name
that was eother assigned by the authorities or fancifully created. In the
1700's, Jews throughout most of the Austrian Empire were commanded to adopt
hereditary surnames and clerks were appointed for each district to ensure that it
was done. In some instances, neames were assigned from a list of approved
names or made up. Beider, from whose book this information is drawn states that
in some areas of Galicia and the surrounding country, as many as 30-35% of
surnames were in this category. I am giving a presentation at my Temple on the
meaning and origin of Jewish Surnames. It is a fascinating topic.
