Hi,
I stumbled across the chernovitzy website/list serve yesterday and am
very excited to find such a wonderful resource!
My father Yacov Weissmann was born in Chernovitzy in 1935. He also
has a sister Yelena that was born in 1932. His father was a baker by
the name of Marcus (Max) and his mother was Etti Weissmann
(originally Einhorn from Vienna). My father and his family were sent
to Transnistria in 1941 when my father was 6 years old. He remained
there until he was 19 and never returned to Chernovitzy. It is
rumored that his great grandfather was 1 of 24 children but my father
has no living relatives that he knows of besides his sister.
In 1969, he and his parents and his sister immigrated to Israel. My
father married my mother an American sephardic jew and immigrated to
the US in 1974. He has no knowledge or memory of other Weissmann or
Chernovitzy relatives.
My parents live in Northern California and at 72 my father is in
great health, he's just not very internet savvy. He speaks Yiddish,
German, Russian, Hebrew and English.
I thought I would try and help him find out some more information
about his past.
Thanks in advance for any insight or information you can provide!
Warm Regards,
Maya (Weissmann) Kraft
