Greetings,
I received the notice below and thought those of you who live in the
D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area might be interested in attending. I, of course,
in constructing my future exhibition on Czernowitz, would like to include
some songs from Czernowitz, including audio and even video. However, I do
not live in the area and cannot attend and make inquiries, etc. Here is the
posting:
Cafe Kasrilevke presents:
"SONGS FROM CHERNOVITZ: THE 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF THE
CHERNOVITZ CONFERENCE"
with singer/songwriter Asya Vaisman
and musician Pete Rushefsky
Sunday, October 28, 7:30 p.m.
JCC of Greater Washington
6125 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD
SPECIAL REDUCED ADMISSION -- SEE BELOW
Join us for an evening of love songs, philosophical ruminations,
Lullabies, and dancing songs, which all share one common trait, that
least one of the song's authors has or had a strong connection to
Chernovitz, a beautiful town in modern-day Ukraine. Chernovitz is well
known for its many diverse and important contributions to Yiddish
culture, but few people realize that Chernovitz was also a birthplace
of modern Yiddish song.
Asya Vaisman is a singer/songwriter and a PhD student at Harvard
University, working on her dissertation on the Yiddish songs of
Hassidic women.
Pete Rushefsky is a leading performer of klezmer music on the tsimbl
and banjo and is the Executive Director of the Center for Traditional
Music and Dance in New York.
REDUCED ADMISSION PRICES BY SPECIAL SUBSIDY FROM FRIENDS OF YIDDISH OF
GREATER WASHINGTON: Only $3 for members of the JCC, Yiddish of Greater
Washington, and the Workmens Circle, $5 for others
Reservations not required. For more information, call Lynn Gittleson
