Dear Abraham,
I was very moved by your description of the visit to the Toynbee Halle. It
brought back some of my memories, including a plesant experience with a
Subotniki couple during the worst time of the war. If I may, I would like to
correct the dates in your memo: the school operated form the end of 1943 to
the beginninig of 1944 ( just before the Soviet liberation), not 1942-43, as
you wrote. As you point out, it would have been unthinkable to have a Jewish
school in 1942 and early 1943. The change in the attitude by the Romanian
rulers was another evidence of their conviction that the war had been lost
and that further persecution of the Jews would not have been in their
interest.
Regards,
Fred Schneider
