Dear Czernowitzers,

The first time I returned to Czernowitz, my guide told me, that by Ukrainian
law, I could reclaim the property which had belonged to my family. I have no
interest in doing so, but wonder whether we Jewish Czernowitzers, could
reclaim Jewish communal properties, such as the Tempel and the various
synagogues.

Last summer, I looked into the possibility of doing this and found the
following:

There is a World Jewish Restitution Organization - WJRO, to whom we
could turn for advice and help, in our attempts to do something
about the former Jewish community properties in Czernowitz.

Established in 1992 by the World Jewish Congress, the World Jewish
Restitution Organization (WJRO) is an umbrella organization of several
international Jewish groups. The WJRO seeks restitution of private and
communal Jewish property and compensation when restitution is not possible.
The WJRO works with both governmental and Jewish organizations in order to
assure appropriate restitution legislation and recovery of looted Jewish
property.

Contact:

Is there anyone who would be willing to contact this organization to have
them look into the possibilities?

Mimi
