Hi Gang... The site referred to by Hardy is actually a Czernowitz
(Chernivtsi) photo blog, where folks post photos of Bukovina/Czernowitz
etc. and others comment on them -- a living photo dialogue. It's called
the 'gr_czernowitz Live Journal Community'. It's another example of free
information sharing. Too bad I can't read Cyrillic (more on that below).
Now, I saw exactly the same thing as David last night; some of our new
photos from the Cz-L website are on their site. However, this is a two
way street. Over the years, I've cribbed photos from them for our
website and will continue to do so. From my perspective, this kind of
activity is what makes the web, the web. A implicit co-operative sharing
of information.
The copyright situation on our website is: there is none. I would like
to keep it that way. Even if we copyright everything on our website, it
means nothing, as we have no way of enforcing it, nor would I want to
get into that.
David is correct, it would have been courteous of the picture bandits to
have asked permission, however they didn't. But surely we realize that
everything that goes up on our website is very public.
Google has catalogued almost every file on the site (over 6,000 of
them), as have the other major search engines. So, the downside is
people can steal our photos and materials; the upside is we can steal
theirs (if you see it in those terms). I do ask permission if the
original owner is known, just as a courtesy. It's only been denied once.
Some of you may be aware of the old DizzyWeb webpage which became
defunct last year. I was approached by the owner of that site who needed
to 'park' his Chernivtsi Dizzy Web material somewhere. It's now on
ehpes.com. That is, if you go to: http://dizzyweb.ehpes.com you will
find most of that original site along with a link to the blog that Hardy
found.
About leaning Cyrillic, take a look at http://learn-cyrillic.ehpes.com
Prof. Jules Levin tries to guide you through the alphabet and reading
documents for genealogical purposes -- a work in progress.
All the best for 2007!
