I am a new subscriber to the Czernowitz-L list. My =
grandfather, Chaim Sattinger, came in 1899 from Davideni (now Davydivka) =
in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now in the Ukraine. =
It is located just southwest of Chernivtsi at 48 degrees 67 minutes =
latitude and 25 degrees 33 minutes longitude. His mother died when he =
was two and he was raised by his sister, Brone. His other siblings were =
Jacob, Benjamin, Mendel (Max), Leah, Malke (Molly or Miriam), a =
half-brother David and perhaps some half-sisters.
His father, Israel, was a butcher, came to the United States =
in 1906 and died in 1921. Neither my grandfather nor his siblings =
remembered their mother's name accurately. Her first names were Feige =
Raquel, or Fanny Rose, and her last name is recorded on marriage =
certificates as being either Ruppinger or Rusbringer. I'm speculating =
that the name is actually Rubinger, because there were apparently =
Rubingers living in Ispas about ten miles from Davydivka.
Malka (Molly) Sattinger migrated to the United States in =
about 1906 and married Joseph Weisselberger (son of Solomon =
Weisselberger and Rosa Klein), who was from the same area and arrived =
about the same time.
There are various groups of Sattingers around the world, but =
we are uncertain how we are related. I have a letter from my grandfather =
to me in which he lists his uncles Abraham and Haskel, his aunt Bloomie, =
and their children. However, I understand that there are currently no =
known records from that time for Davydivka, so I am waiting to see what =
appears.
My research questions are as follows. What was the family =
name of my grandfather's mother? What is the relation among various =
Sattinger branches? (There are also a number of German Sattingers that =
are not Jewish.) What is the origin of the Sattinger name?
My wife, Ulla, and I live in Slingerlands, New York, just =
south of Albany. Ulla is a potter, and I teach economics at the =
University at Albany.
