Some recent discussion took place on the Gesher Galicia mailing list
concerning a book chapter about life in Galicia in 1839. The book
chapter came from a book entitled "Narrataive of a Mission of Inquiry
to the Jews from the Church of Scotland in 1839". Thinking that this
book might have not only a chapter about Galicia, but one about
Bukovina as well, I went to the Cornell library catalog and made a
request to borrow the book. Well, I'm still waiting for that book to
"show up" at my branch library, but meanwhile, an email went out on
the Gesher Galicia list pointing out that the entire book had been
digitized and was now available online.

Well the book does indeed have some limited information on towns in
Bukowina, including Czernowitz, Suceava, and Sereth, but it leaves
you craving more details and information. Here's how you can go
about finding it. Go to http://books.google.com and search for
"Narrative of a Mission of Inquiry". Click on the first link shown on
the page that comes up. You can choose here to either download the
entire book as a PDF file (22.7 MB) or you can go directly to the
page where the description of the Jews of Bukovina begins by typing
in page number 427 and hitting the "return" key on your keyboard.

Warmest wishes,

Bruce
