Jacob Rosen recently wrote to several JewishGen mailing lists with
news of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's database of 152,000
Jewish refugees who were in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, c. 1941-1942.
More information and a search engine are available at
<http://resources.ushmm.org/uzbekrefugees/name_list.php#about>.
Digital images of the registration cards -- written in Russian --
are also online.
I found records there for my mother's brother, Pinkhas REIFER, and
his wife, Sara BIRKENTHAL -- Czernowitzers who apparently lived in
Kishinev before fleeing (or being deported?) to Tashkent. They
later returned to Czernowitz, where my uncle, known as Pinchas
FALIK, was manager of the philharmonic, and my aunt (Sidi TAL) was
a popular actress in the Yiddish theatre.
This database lists hundreds of people from "Chernovitsy" and
vicinity. Information on the registration cards includes:
Family name
Given name
Patronymic (father's name)
Relationship to the head of household (wife, child, etc.)
Gender
Year of birth or age at the time of registration
Place of birth
Profession
Nationality
Former place of residence
Place of work before evacuation
Position
Current place of residence/address
Current place of work, name of the organization, position
Reference/registration number in the Registry books
(list #, page # and individual number on the list)
Minor children are listed on the back of the card.
Since the names have been transliterated from Russian,
spellings may be different than expected. For example, the
surnames that usually begin SCH... start with SH...
