THE STREETS OF CZERNOWITZ
I love the streets of Czernowitz, for this is where I grew up.
I love the old German street names , we never used the new Rumanian names.
Nobody I knew used them. Ask an old-timer to show you Constantin Brancoveanu
street and he would scratch his head but ask him about the Liliengasse
even in his
sleep he would know .
So I came back last year to meet my beloved streets and here they were ,
unchanged
as I left them , but the names what have they done to the names ?
no more Juden- Synagogen – Uhrmachergasse
Landhaus – Falia – Herrengasse
Morario - Pitzelli – Metzgergasse
Instead we found new Ukrainian strange names.
Here it goes:
Bobrov ,Frunze and Kaniuk,
Gglavki, Franka ,Karmeliuk,
Gakman, Gonti, Gogol , Glinki
Goncharov , Gaidar, Grebinki
Bobrov ,Popovitch and Puschkin
Sagaydachni and Babushkin
Yaremuch and Zalozhezki
Zagula and Zankovetski
Yaremuk and Baturinski
Gavriliuk and Kotsubinski
Lwiwska , Kivska and Lisenka
Samarkandska and Shevchenka
Bogun, Bobrov , Khmelnitski
Gagarin, Gogol and Sheptitzki,
Gavriliuk and Kotliarewsky
Dimitrow and Dostoyewski
Pereyslavska , Razin , Prutsky
One more street and I go nuts-ky
Yessir,
Hardy
