Dear friends,
Looking back at my Czernowitz booklet, where I made all kind of notes, I
realize that I have not accounted for the money collected for the film
viewing. It was
rather upsetting to see half the audience leave early because of next
day's trip, but also because our young director insisted on showing his
film first, which made it a long evening of course.
I collected $70, and 350 hrivny, of which I paid the hotel costs for the
viewing, tipped the technician who at first didn't want to (have noticed this more often, some persons
in Cz. are quite proud), then next day I went with Mark Hecker to the Jewish House,
where we gave $30 to the Eliezer Steinbarg society. It is an almost
empty room, with faded photos and articles on the walls, an old table, a
chair and a small
cabinet. A Mr. Schkodnik and a woman were there.
When I asked for a receipt, it took ages to get out some clean paper,
and in the end they found a photo of Joseph Burg where they noted the
donation.
I felt so sorry for them that I returned next day and gave them the
remaining money (Mrs. Malik) rounding it up to $50.
It was not much, but maybe it helped them a little.
Thinking about 2008, am trying to get closer to the Lauder Foundation in
Berlin, who at first declined any help, but would look at a "project".
Regards, and until soon probably,
Gabriele
