[Cz-L] Ruth Wisse - Czernowitzer or Litvak?

Harvard Professor Ruth Roskies Wisse may have been born
in Czernowitz in 1936, but she appears to identify as a
Litvak. See her Sept. 2007 interview with The Forward...

Let's hope she was joking! She does acknowledge the
influence of the German-speaking governess she had in
Czernowitz and her admiration of Eliezer Shteynbarg.

Wisse's parents, Nathan and Masha Roskies, left Vilna in
1930, according to her brother, David Roskies, quoted at

The family immigrated in 1940 to Montreal, where David
Roskies was born. He is a professor at the Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York

Their mother was the subject of a documentary film,
"Daughter of Vilna: The Life in Song of Masha Roskies,"
narrated by Professor Wisse and produced by her brother.

Whatever their background, this is a wonderful,
accomplished family, with a strong tradition of
Yiddishkeit.
