Hello everybody,
My name is Maita, and I am a retired attorney and United States Peace
Corps volunteer living in Chernivtsi. I am working with the City of
Chernivtsi and a Jewish organization (under the leadership of Natalia
Shevchenko), who are in cooperation planning to open a Jewish museum in
Chernivtsi, and, more immediately, prepare an exhibition for the city's 600
year anniversary celebration in 2008. Thus, I was excited and interested to
find your website. I understand that your group is interested in
restoration of the Jewish cemetary, and/or central synagog (now a movie
theater). These projects would be fabulous, of course. I can't say why the
restoration of the Jewish cemetary has proceeded only in fits and starts,
but it seems like a project with definite possibilites. As for the central
synagog, I am ignorant of the obstacles (other than the obvious financial
obstacle) but imagine it would be quite complicated. For now the city and
Jewish organizations are focused on preserving relics of the era when
Chernivtsi was a Jewish intellectual and cultural center. Specifically, the
focus is on assembling a collection to exhibit in 2008 and thereafter house
in a permanent museum.
It seems that in the diaspora many items of interest, including
photographs, are no longer in Chernivtsi. They have been scattered far and
wide. I am writing to enlist your help in tracking down family photos,
documents of historical interest, and items related to the arts and Jewish
culture in Chernivtsi before WWII. Any assistance or leads in this regard
would be greatly appreciated.
Natalia has asked me if members of your group are interested in the
history of the German speaking Jews of Chernivtsi, or the Yiddish speaking
Jews. I suspect that it's both, but ask because of Natalia's inquiry.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Maita Prout
