Dear Marion Tauschwitz,
We are so excited to read that you are working on a biography of Selma =
Meerbaum-Eisinger! =20
=20
We wanted to clarify a few of the historical points that you mentioned in =
your previous email to the list. Unfortunately, neither of us ever met =
Hilde Domin, nor did we ever have Selma's hand-written allbum of poetry, =
Bluetenlese, in our possession: We could not have given the album to her.
=20
We outlined our understanding of the events leading to the first =
commercial publication of Selma's poems in Harvest of Blossoms. Based on =
the writings of Juergen Serke, Pearl Fichman and others, we think that the =
account, sketched below is more accurate:
=20
When we met with Juergen Serke in Hamburg several years ago, he told us =
that Hilde Domin had shown him Selma's poem, "Poem", that had been =
included at Paul Celan's insistence in an anthology published in the DDR. =
This poem inspired and motivated him to see if there existed other poems =
that Selma had written.
=20
Serke told us that he found the album of Selma's hand -written poems at =
the home of her friend, Renee Abramovici. He tracked down the album =
after finding and talking to Selma's beloved teacher, Hersch Segal, as =
well as with other friends and family, living in Israel, who survived. He =
helped arrange the publication of Bluetenlese in Germany by Fischer =
Verlag.
=20
Probably the best way for you to get the document that Menasian cited =
would be to contact the Fuerth Stadttheater , for whom he wrote this =
piece.
=20
We look forward to hearing more about the progress of your biography. =
Please feel free to contact us.
=20
Sincerely,
Helene and Irene Silverblatt
