Dear Christian and Hardy,
Interesting interpretation and I guess it's very possibly accurate.
I'm very surprised, though. In my experience in dealing with many
cemeteries over the years, not one Jewish cemetery would permit
a Christian symbol on its grounds. In fact, there is a trend in the
US (not yet in Canada) to bury non-Jewish spouses beside their
Jewish mates, but no such symbols are permitted - the stones have
names, dates, etc., but that's all - even in Reform Jewish cemeteries.
I have a cousin in Philadelphia who is the owner of two large Jewish
cemeteries, which I have toured with him, and we discussed this.
At our cemetery board meetings, we have had numerous discussions
on this subject. But we will never permit mixed
burials in our very large cemetery, which is orthodox - this is written
in the constitution.
Merle
