RE: [Cz-L] Stone with cross.

Which resolves, to my relief, the query I had about my still-Orthodox-ish great-grandfather Moriz Pollak, whose grave in Olomouc Jewish cemetery also reads 'Friede seinen Aschen'. Not only would cremation have been forbidden to Jews, I expect that in east-central Europe before WW1 it was even very rare.

Hardy is perfectly right. It has nothing to do with cremation. Many of the tombstones in Czernowitz have the phrase "Friede seiner/ihrer Asche".
