Dear Mimi,
you are right, the cross is not carved into the stone. What we see ist not the cross itself but the trace of the cross. Most likely it was made of metal, was added to the stone and was removed later. Either because it was stolen - like many metal-works vanish at the cemetery - or it was removed because somebody felt it to be inappropriate.
If we hopefuly meet next summer in Czernowitz I will show you the stone.
