My late mother Pearl Spiegel Fichman wrote in her memoirs Before Memory Fad=
es that since her parents' marriage ceremony was not recognized by the loca=
l authorities the children were not permitted to carry their father's name.=
Later the parents corrected this by legalizing their marriage and 'adoptin=
g' their own children . . .

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Birth Records in Czernowitz
I believe this was a not uncommon practice of the times. According to
our family genealogy, for which he was a major and primary source, my
father's first cousin Shlomo (Fred) Lifschitz, was the son of Shalom
Wiznitzer and Malkah Lifschitz. Born in my father's town of birth in
Bukovina, Waschkoutz am Cheremosh (Vashkovitz) in 1902, he and all
four of his siblings carried their mother's last name. Shlomo went to
Palestine in 1938. On Dec 13, 1939 he married Esther Altman. Their
only son, Shalom, joined the Israeli army and died at age 18 in a
tragic truck accident. Fred and Esther are buried in Tel Aviv, Israel.
