Hello All,

This discussion brings me to think that there could be more information
available since I was in Czernowitz in 2009. I was able to obtain arrest
records for my grandfather that are held in the former SBU archives.
Whereas we were so fortunate to be able to obtain these records and follow
a paper trail of my grandfather's arrest and ultimate deportation, we never
found out the most important piece of information about which prison he was
sent to and where he died. The head of the archives told us the date of
death but never told us where he was buried.

If anyone has new information about how to obtain these records please let
me know. It is the last piece of information that would give our family
closure and perhaps find where my grandfather, Gustav Gedaly, is buried. We
know he was living in Petropovlosk in the spring of 1951. He somehow
smuggled 2 letters to Burcharest to my mother and grandmother and those
letters made it to Israel where my mother and grandmother found out that he
was alive after being told by the Red Cross that he had died in 1946. My
friend Vadim Altscan at the NHM here in DC said whoever smuggled those
letters could have been arrested and sentenced to prison for carrying
letters written in German from the Soviet Union. Even more interesting, the
letters were written part of a correspondence within a 2-week period
between my mother's friend Erica Gottlieb and my grandfather who was in
Siberia.

I look forward to anyone who has additional information.

Sincerely,
Ilana Gordon
