Yosi,

The deportations from Bukovina did start earlier.
you ignore the sad faith of the Jews that lived in the villages near Czernowitz, in the '40- '41 Soviet occupied territories.

These people were forced to leave their homes right after the beginning of the Barbarossa Operation (late June, early July '41), and marched all the way to Transnistria trough the hot summer. the few survivors arrived Mogilev on September.

Dov Shay, in his book "15 out of 100 survived" express their surprise of people arriving Mogilev on trains, with clean clothing, worm Jackets and suitcases.
These were the deportees from Southern Bukovina and Cz.

For the Hebrew readers, the book is available on line:

To clear up a few facts:
1. The deportations started after "Simkhat Tora" 5702 around 13-14 October 1941, and there were no deportations to Vapniarka before that.
 2. The deportations from Czernowitz were made on the train in cattle wagons. From most other places in Bucovina and certainly Bessarabia the Jews were driven on foot (some lucky ones did part of the way on horse driven carriages). It was a rainy autumn with the usual deep mud.
 3. Elias Weinstein arrived in what was then Palestine in 1943 and started publishing the "Die Stimme" in 1944. I think that for this action alone he deserves the gratitude from anyone who cares about preserving the memory of Jewish Bukovina. By the way I recommend the January paper of "Die Stimme" to anyone who can read it.
