Czernowitzers,
What are you talking about? Who wants to live there, among the descendants
of murderers? Your prospective neighbours may be the grandchildren of people
who murdered my father's family with the axes in Hlyboka. By the way, they
did it, primarily, to take away their properties. Now they all moved in and
are living comfortable in houses that used to belong to the Jews.
I hope some people are just joking about returning to Cz. The medical care
there is substandard. For me, the today's Ukraine is not better that the
Soviets. They claim to be a democracy. In fact, they are thieves that have
the hutzpa to sell something that doesn't belong to them- namely, the Jewish
houses!
Please come to your senses and stop dreaming,
Serah

Re Restitution and living in Cz - Those of you living in the U.S. and
Canada, be advised that your tax dollars provide the Ukraine with
substantial aid. Contact your representatives and beef. Point out that most
ex-Communist countries have returned property. Former Russian territories go
back to the teens so it's understandable but Bucovina turned Communist only
after WW II, like Poland and Romania, etc. If you had property in Kiev, it's
one story but Cz should be treated as all the others which have returned
property. I know a retired Romanian professor (Harvard and Boston College)
who is the son of a former Minister in King Carol's government. They had
five homes in Bucharest and the surrounding area and he got them all back.
Those of you which live in other Western countries, check to see if your
country provides the Ukraine with aid and if so, get after your
representatives and make noise.
As for living in Cz today? Nobody can give anyone else advice since that's a
very personal matter. Early man settled by rivers for drinking water and
transportation. Cz with the Prut passes that test. In some ways it probably
has some of the inconveniences of a third world country - which can be
charming if you're a romantic. Health care is another important
consideration. With socialized medicine in much of the industrialized world
which often is downright deadly dangerous, Cz may offer relatively decent
medical care at affordable prices. All the operations I ever had were
performed in my childhood in Cz before we left it.
Theodor Herzel chose Palestine for historical and religious reasons,
ignoring the fact that the land offers little potential for farming or to be
exploited in terms of minerals or other riches and ignoring the fact that it
was surrounded by a people whose bible instructs them to destroy Jews. Yet
over six million Jews call Israel home today and it doubtlessly ranks among
the top five countries of the world as a good place in which to live.
I would not consider Cz for my terminal years. I'm too old to learn yet
another language and if I'm going to move I'd prefer a tropical island. But
I would be very happy to repossess the home my grandmother built and in
which I was born.
Cheers,
Andy Halmay
