A short, relevant story....about 10 years ago I announced to my friends
and co-workers that I was collecting and shipping books for the soon-to-be-developed
English section of a municipal library in Chernowitz (where I had
given a lecture on one of my visits.) A few days later an older Jewish friend, who had
quite an extensive library called and reduced me to sobs with her rage. "You are
collecting books for those murderers," she screamed over the phone. My late husband Rudy
was alive then (a survivor of Transnistria) and he was furious when he saw me crying over the attack
that had just occurred. He said that I had to call her back
immediately, and these were his words: "You tell her for me that there were
good Ukrainians and there were bad Ukrainians. And while you're at it,
tell her also that there were good Jews and there were bad Jews. Tell
her I know. I was there."
