Dear all,
I always feel "obliged" to add my thoughts to so many open questions. Why
is Germany always mentioned and not ALL the other contributors? I think
that Mr.Herrman is not the only witness to the silence imposed by the older
generation upon the younger one. I/we, while living in Germany in the 60s,
met so many people of our age (in our 30s) who tried so hard to find an
answer and met with a wall of silence. Some of them were there themselves.
I'll quote our friend Dieter, whom we discussed these questions with
throughout many nights and it was he who lived through it. At 14 he was
recruited to the "Flack Abwehr" (anti aircraft fire) from school. He grew
up in the Hitler Jugend (Hitler's youth movement) and at the age of 17 went
into the army. As he put it "this is where I lived and this is how I grew
up, this was my world and I knew no different. We were exposed to ONE
opinion and knew no other world, listened to no other news. And so, at the
end of the war I came to the Oder and we, the whole regiment, stood waiting
for orders that's when our commander said: " Now each one go their way".
This was the first time I was to think for myself!!.No orders no
order.(Ordnung)
Then I went to Auschwitz and I couldn't believe what I saw, all the
atrocities and human misery was too much to bear but then I came to the
ovens THEY WERE PATENTED!!!! not only did they burn human beings but, the
German efficiency!!!, they had a patent on it if others want to use it!!!!
That was it for me, this was my past? my blind thoughtless belief??"
We never asked Dieter where his home was, we knew his and Christl's father
died, we never asked where nor when and were never told, all we know is
that in the 60s they fled East Germany to the West I never asked nor will I
ever know what his son and HIS family will ever know and how interested
they are in us, but we are in touch.
As for Romania and all other countries occupied by Germany, all the Germans
really did was to take the stopper off or open Pandora's box, all the evil
has been there and to my greatest regret, fear and disgust is that it is as
alive today as it was then all you have to do is listen to Palestinian
propaganda, the London Times and all of Europe. Hitler isn't needed names
change but ideas never do,THE ETERNAL JEW. No one needs to apologise as
long as there's the "sinner" the world continues in its old ways.
Have a happy week end, Shavua Tov,
anny
