The Jewish inhabitants of Czernowitz had no say in who governed them.
Neither during the Turkish rule, nor the Austrian, Romanian or Soviet.
In the 17th century, under Turkish rule, Jews in the Bukovina were
spared
the atrocities and murders committed by Chmielnitski and his supporters,
but Turkish rule was corrupt, inefficient and backward.
Under Austrian rule the city flourished and Jews had equal rights.
Both Ukrainians and Jews voted against being annexed by Romania in 1918,
Nobody listened. Then came the first Soviet annexation, dispelling
the favorable ideas anyone had about Communism.
Then the Romanians returned. No matter whether you were born in
Czernowitz,
as were your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents,
you were a "Jidan" and deported.
It was clear that Czernowitz Jews had prospered under Austrian rule,
like at no other time. Czernowitz Jews before WW2 compared Romania,
Poland,
Russia and other neighboring countries to Austria and decided they
preferred Austria.
