Dear Christian,

I was in Vilna, Lithuania in 2006. There is a Jewish school there for the
small Jewish
community. It has about 250 students, many of whom are
not Jewish, as the school has very high educational standards.

The definition of a Jew in Lithuania is that of a person with one parent or
even grandparent
who is or was Jewish, not necessarily Jewish by traditional orthodox Jewish
(Halachic) laws.
The Jewish population of Lithuania was decimated in the Holocaust.
So, yes - sadly, Yiddish is definitely not a priority in Lithuania any more.

Merle
