The people who remained in Czernowitz and those who were deported,
were not completely cut off from each other. I know definitely, that
my parents were able to send packages and money to some
of their relatives and that we occasionally got letters from them.
In the case of my family, all the communication was through
my father's cousin, Manfred Reifer, who before the war had been
a delegate to the Romanian parliament.
I know of other Czernowitzers who remained in the city, that they
were able to do the same, because they were on friendly terms
with Romanian officers. I think that there was also a way to communicate
and send packages through a chain of villagers.

I think that in Czernowitz we already knew about "the other side of
the Bug"
in 1942 and if that was so, it is likely that this knowledge was
transmitted to
those deported to Transnistria.
