[Cz-L] Bukovinians Faraway From Czernowitz

Czernowitzers...

Thanks to our fellow memeber, Prof. Alfred Schneider, we've got exactly the right antidote to - literally - cool down passions. The unique photo, taken 50 years ago, in February 1963,

is showing Alfred Schneider - and a few Weddel seals - at the McMurdo Research Base in Antarctica.

Alfred stated: "I estimate this is about as far on earth from Czernowitz one can get. One of my colleagues who belonged to the same Temple in Baltimore that I did was also there and the two of us held a Shabbat Service at the Base chappel, probably the Jewish service ever held that close to the South Pole. [...] My trip to Antarctica in 1963 was in connection with a small nuclear power plant which the company I worked for at that time (Martin Marietta) had built for the Research Base at McMurdo. This plant operated for 17 years and provided the electricity and desalinated seawater for the base. We did have friendly relations with the Weddel seals and the Adelie penguins who had a large rookery about half an hour's flight by helicopter form McMurdo."

Thank you so much, dear Alfred, what a cool stuff! In 2006 I made motorbike trip from the Netherlands via Siberia to the Mongolian border in Ulan Ude and thought, it was quite faraway, but... - I admit, you are the record holder!
