Czernowitzers...
Bruce and I have been fielding emails from List members confused about
two email lists. Below is my effort to try and clarify this situation.
Our List: Let me assure you that the [Cz-L] Discussion Group or Ehpes,
is functioning exactly the same as before; has not disintegrated; and is
not about to do so. All that is Ehpes is alive and well, accessible, and
functioning exactly the same as in the past. There have been no changes.
The so called 'Other List': About a week ago, one of our members, Hardy
Breier, selected a number of our list members to receive emails directly
from him. Apparently, he did not ask if these people wished to receive
his emails, he simply put a list together and started sending emails to
about 30 folks, myself included. Some indicated they were most surprised to
end up on a list that they had not subscribed to; others thought they
were receiving emails from Ehpes, when in fact they were not. This is
the 'Other List' as I understand it.
The confusion can be compounded If you have all your incoming emails
going into 'one single folder', then it becomes quite difficult to tell
at a glance if it came from Hardy's group of selected email addresses or
Ehpes -- UNLESS you take the time, BEFORE you hit REPLY or REPLY ALL to
understand to what and to whom you're replying.
Here's how to tell that you're looking at mail from our Ehpes group:
Look at the Subject line of the message. If it has '[Cz-L]' near or at
the beginning of the 'Subject' line; then it almost certanly has been
processed by the Cornell University Listserv and can be assumed as
coming from the Ehpes list. The 'To' line may or may not say 'Czernowitz-L',
depending on whether the List was being Cc'd or addressed directly.
Now of course, anyone can attach the [Cz-L] symbol to the Subject line
of an email, but as of this date, that has not happened. So until it
does, this is a reasonable first indicator that the mail your looking at
has passed through the moderation process and has been distributed to
our members by the Cornell University process.
There is another way to tell: Look at the 'To:' line in the Message: If
it is addressed to 'Undisclosed Recipients' or to a long string of email
addressees, It did not come from the Czernowitz-L List. If the To: and
From: addresses are the same, it did not come from Ehpes.
I understand that Hardy will remove individuals from his list if asked
to do so. So you would need to contact him directly and ask to be
removed if that is your wish.
Hopefully, this lessens the confusion. If you have questions, I will try
and answer them.
Best,
jerome
