The incredible Shayke Dan

Shayke Dan was born in Lipcani in 1909 as Dan Trachtenberg,
came to Palestine and in WW2 volunteered for the Jewish Brigade.
In 1944 he was trained as a paratrooper and was dropped in
occupied Yugoslavia and then stole into Antonescu Romania .
Mission : to free American Air crew downed in the Ploesti bombings.
Romania capitulated then and a flow of Jewish refugees moved
  west wards.
Dan who saw this decided to join the Jewish Illegal immigration
organization ,the Aliah B, to help.
Soon he became the Big Wheel for Eastern Europe.

As a born Rumanian there was no better man for the job.
He became personal friend with Broz Tito ,Moshe Piade
    all Rumanian , Bulgarian PMs.
He traveled with a suitcase full of US dollars, and bought Jews .
He then shipped them to Palestine.
He also bought old ships and renovated them. He rented trains,
transportation, mountain guides, Italian resort villages ,port
facilities. Arranged for Switzerland surgery for banned
communist east country leaders . Refurbished old and
forgotten Adriatic Croatian landings to escape British
surveillance. He paid Ceaucescu for Jews by head .
A humble man, lived in a rented two room Tel Aviv flat.
Many millions unaccounted dollars passed through his
      hands .
All he wanted was to help his people.
         Bring them home .
I too ,as so many, came on the SS Pan York in December of 1947
      arranged by Shaike Dan.,
