Ninon Ausländer was not related to Rose Ausländer. The poet Hilde Domin (I wrote a biography on her) was befriended to her and Hesse and she had asked her.

Why was Hesse so popular? In 1922 Hesse published his Indian novel "Siddhartha" about Indian culture and Asian wisdom which was very popular then. Selma Meerbaum and her friends read Rabindranat Tagores "The Home and The World". It was this very book she took with her to Transnistria, the camp Michailowka, when she was deported. Like Tagore's "The Home and The World" Hesse's "Glasperlenspiel", too, offers the vision of a free nation. Young people were encouraged to avoid victimology and instead seek self-help and education - words that fell on fertile ground among the youth of Czernowitz at that time who admired Theodor Herzl - think of Hashomer Hatzair etc.
