Good story, Hardy - about the two medal winner. I haven't heard the word Kukuruz in a lifetime. It sounds like something that would come from a rooster - "Kukuroooooooz!" I don't know about you but I can roll my "R's" better than any Russian. Did you make this up? Now getting back to Kukuruz, does anyone know the roots of that word? Romanian words seldom used K's. The "K" is common in the German vocabulary. Corn is an interesting commodity. Discovered in the Americas by the Spanish in the early colonial period, it made its way to Romania to become its national dish, Mamaliga. I recall reading that in the 1930s little Romania grew more corn than Canada into which Romania could fit twenty times. But in 1994 when I visited Bucuresti, I stayed with a Romanian and said that being back there it would be appropriate to have some mamaliga. His reaction was as if I had mentioned a food out of some distant historical period. I walked
around to half a dozen stores before I could find one that had some corn meal - and it was filled with chaff and stuff - we had to run it through sieves over and over again to clean it. The young in Romania don't know Mamaliga. Ceausescu probably discouraged them from eating it or banned it outright because it was considered a peasant food and he wanted to elevate the culture.
