Dear Bruce, dear all,

We are indeed grateful for any tips or experience list members may
have as there are often many "hidden" collections that are best
accessed through personal contacts. Particularly if any of you have
done research in the smaller towns - Camp. Mold, Vatra Dornei,
Radauti, Gura Humor., Siret - and found documents there, we would be
delighted to know about this. In theory all documents older than 70
years were brought to the Suceava State Archives, but this rule seems
not necessarily to have always been followed.

It is difficult to describe succinctly the way the archives are
organized here. Basically the list that is online of the "holdings" is
a list of umbrella collections and their inventories. These
inventories (for the most part only available as hard copies, though
some are online like the Primarias) then contain more lists of
individual documents or smaller collections. For example, the
Collection of Documents has two inventory lists, which together
contain thousands of documents --- in order to know whether any of
those documents are applicable to Jewish history, you must read
through the hard copy of those inventories (hundreds of pages) and
only THEN are you at the stage of actually requesting a document to
see if, in fact, it is applicable. That is just one example and
admittedly one of the "worst" in terms of time consumption. The final
website for the project will allow users to search via place or other
key word and immediately receive a description of documents and call
number, etc - circumventing the hours of reading through inventory
lists!

Best wishes,

Julie
