It is hard for us to understand how it feels to have a murderer for a close relative (Maybe family members of serial killers can relate to this). I am not a psychologist. You are right , the movie is a kind of all over the place, but the emotions are real and it gives hope that this time around there will be enough good people.
About 20 years ago I met Saul Porel, the author of "Europa, Europa" later made into movie, at
a friend's house and ended up giving him a ride to his hotel. On the 5 minutes ride we discovered that we both speak Yiddish, Russian, Hebrew, and I do understand German.
The ride did take take only five minutes, but we continued talking in the car in front of the hotel for 2 hours. Some of it was about family (we both had 2 sons), family origins and history.
He was going to Germany, were he was to meet high school and college students to speak about his experience. My reaction was: why? how does it feel to go back?
His answer was that those kids should learn from the survivors and not from the perpetrators and/or bystanders. This wasn't his first trip. He said that it was always a great experience.
I am not a particularly forgetting/forgiving person and I know it's a drop in a bucket, but one needs hope.
