Dear Irene.
This is not specifically a Czernowitzer phenomena. According to the Jewish historians from Yad Vashem, most of the Jewish households had a bible, prayer book, candlesticks, kiddush cup and a book shelf holding books in Hebrew, Yiddish or Ladino and the local language, and, what else, newspapers. I don't think it was advertising or propaganda. Just as natural as going to Prut or taking a walk. As a matter of fact I have a picture of me at age 5 reading the newspaper in Schillerpark sitting on a blanket. I guess it was a picnic, but you still brought along something to read. On a serious note. Newspapers were the best source of information and Jewish people were always involvede, in trade, politics, etc...
