The answer is volume.
 A plain text message is 5-7 KB big.
 A HTML including a presentation or pictures is 8-10 MB.
 About 2000 times bigger or more.
 Our Archives keeps mails from 2002.
  If all of these were HTML you would need an extra powerplant at Cornell
   enough power to feed a medium sized town.
       Facebook does it.

Anny has a good point. I am on the computer ten hours per day and in touch
with thousands of sites around the world, some in third world countries. Not
a single one of them demands plain text. Don't you think it is about time to
switch to some up-to-date software?
