While we are on the topic of Hollywood celebrities:
Erwin Chargaff, one of the founding fathers of modern molecular
biology and an ardent cultural critic, wrote in his memoirs that his
father, Hermann, who owned a small bank in Czernowitz, lost all his
wealth due to unscrupulous employees and customers, and that "some of
the embezzled or otherwise defalcated money ended up in America,
contributing to the early glory of Hollywood". Not being a big fan of
Hollywood, Chargaff caustically concluded "I could have wished it a
better use."
If the story is true (Chargaff himself doubted it), Czernowitz
deserves another credit for starting the world's movie industry with
stolen money. Does anyone know, who were the culprits?
