Dear Czernowitzers,
To answer those of you who have had further questions about the proposed
book and to update all of you:
We are talking about a book consisting of memoirs, essays, letters,
documents and photographs of former Czernowitzers and their descendants.
The only possible publisher I have consulted so far, is Jewish Gen
and their Yizkor Book publications. I have corresponded with Joyce Field
who supervises the Yizkor book site.
She initially advised me that what we should consider doing is an online
version at the Yizkor Book site and then later, if there seems to be a
market, Jewish Genealogy would publish it on demand.
If we were to come to an agreement about having an online version at the
Yizkor book site, Joyce would supervise the project.
Should the book later, also be published in hard-cover form, another person
would supervise the "on demand" project.
After receiving inquiries from some of you, I asked Joyce a number of
further questions pertaining to the online publication:
!. About copyright.
Her answer is:
> There is a donor agreement submitted with all material submitted that
> states that the donor retains the copyright.
I asked about material which has already been presented on various
web-sites.
To this she answered:
> Material which has already been presented on other we-sites could still be
> included in the book, as long as there is permission from the web site.
I asked:
Since the memoirs, letters and documents relating to Czernowitz,
most of us have, are in a variety of languages and because
the Czernowitzers are scattered all over the world and therefore
have preferences for different languages, would it be possible to have all
this material in various languages, both while it is on line, as well as
when and if it is published in book form?
Joyce answered:
> yes. I would suggest side by side presentations. many people
> are mono-lingual, and English has, for better or worse, become the
> universal language. Therefore there could be an English translation
> side by side with the original.
Joyce also wrote:
> I realize you don't have an outline yet so everything is tentative.
> Someone has to be the editor of the project, or what we call the
> project coordinator. It can be a tough role, I realize, but you
> can't have 25 people making decisions on content, style, evaluating
> the quality of the writing, establishing some consistency in spelling
> and proper names, etc.
This is all the information I have so far. Some of you have written me,
showing your willingness to contribute to such a book.
I hope that now that you know more about it, many more will be interested
in contributing to the proposed book. I also hope that some of you will
volunteer to be the editor or project coordinator. Possibly the editing job
could be divided among a number of people.
If you know Czernowitzers or their descendants who do not subscribe to the
Cz.-List, please inform them of this proposed project. They may have
material they would wish to contribute and language is not going to be a
barrier.
Please, if you might be willing to contribute to this book, have questions
or suggestions, or want to volunteer for the editing job, write to me,
no later than December 1st, and if possible sooner.
On the subject line, please write: "proposed Czernowitz book"
Mimi
