I recently learned that my grandfather came from Czernowitz. His name was
David Charles b. 1880. He is buried with the Czernowitz Society at the
Wellwood Cemetery in Long Island. David changed his name from Chajes to
Charles. David emmigrated in approx 1897. David Charles/Chajes had a
brother Karl b.1886, also with the last name Charles. As a child there was
a family portrait over my grandparents bed which my mother told me was taken
in Vienna and that all of these relatives died during WW2 (sic), I'm assuing
it was the Chajes family because of the Czernowitz connection . David was
married to Ada (Ida). They lived in Richmond, Virginia and in 1930 (approx)
moved to NY. 1910 Richmond Census says Ada/Ida was born in Russia. There
is no record that I know of of Ada's last name. David and Ada had 2
children--Golda and Herman. Does anyone know of this family or do these
names ring any bells?
