Dear Steven Lasky,
I'm afraid I no longer have letters from the Czernowitz members of my family
(long dead now) but about three years ago I deposited a large collection of
correspondence in the Wiener Library in London, about which I'm sure you know.
It included all the wartime correspondence of scattered members as they
tried to track and help each other - only sometimes successful; some
correspondents just disappear into silence - and in particular my father's desperate
efforts to find a country which would accept him after 1938. I've often thought
these rejection letters alone, from Bolivia, Turkey, Britain, America,
Australia, the Philippines, and many others, would make a sad collection in
themselves. (He eventually got to New Zealand.) My grandparents survived the war in
hiding in Brussels, and were only discovered to be alive when Red Cross
parcels sent by a friend in New York were collected...
I am cutting many long stories very short here. This note to you is just to
say that my family's letters were amazing, and amazing that they were
lovingly kept together when all else was lost. I thought they were safest in the
Wiener Library, where I hope they'll be translated (they are almost all in
German) one day, and at least can be kept together and consulted. It was hard to
hand them over.
I may say that one branch married into the Laski (sic.) family in London!
With best wishes,
Christine Holmes
