How strange for me reading about Naftali Hertz Kon's report on his travel to
Czernowitz in 1944.
My father, Simon Weininger, was born in 1911 in Storojinetz. Both my parents
volunteered to the Red Army. Thereafter, after their demobilization, they
returned to Czernowitz and started working. When survivors of Transnistria
camps started arriving and residence was them denied my father together with
collegues was at the entrance to the city in order to testify that those
people were residents of the city. This way a big number of survivors could
enter the city, were granted residence permits. He also helped a big number
of them getting thereafter work.
My father passed away in 1989. He could have told more about what was
happening then in Czernowitz. I will look in notes left by my Father, may be
there are details about this period of his life and activity.
My family left Czernowitz in May 1945, "repatriere" to Romania. In 1957 we
asked emigration permit for Israel, but it was granted only in 1970!
