Dear Czernowitzer compatriots,

I just finished reading the recently published book by Zvi Yavetz
"Erinnerungen an Czernowitz wo Menschen und Buecher lebten". I recommend
it be added to the Ehpes website under the "A Czernowitz Reading List" link.

I bought the book (its German version - personally translated by Zvi Yavetz)
from the World Union of Jews from Bukovina (Yula Weiner) and found the book
very interesting. It is written in an excellent German. It is my
understanding that the Hebrew version will be published only after the High
Holy Days.

Upon reading the book the reader feels, once again, the sadness of the
1930-1939 events that the Jews in Czernowitz went through. The first part
of the book contains a very detailed autobiography of Zvi Yavetz. I was
especially moved to read some details, very sad and depressing details, of
his childhood. I know him since the 1930's; he was my schoolmate at the
LEG high school and since then we were in touch on-and-off. He never told
me anything about his childhood. It is the first time I learned about it.

Nevertheless, I hope most of you will agree with me that it is a very
interesting book. The second part of the book describes very accurately the
events we underwent in the 1930's in Czernowitz. Very sad indeed.

All the best to all of you, Abraham Kogan
