Dear List members,
My name is Dvorah Netzer, and I am writing a short introduction in my
husband's name.
Prof. Ehud Netzer, architect and archaeologist born in Jerusalem in
1934, is the son of Dr. Yosef Shlomo Menczel who was born in
Strojinet in 1903. Yosef Shlomo came to Palestine in the early
1920's, > was a high school history teacher, but died early, in 1953.
His wife Dr. Puah Ben Tovim Menczel, born the same year,in Jerusalem,
was one of the foremost educators in Israel and died in 1991.
Yosef Shlomo was the son of Shmuel Menczel and Yocheved Kahane. They
were born either in Chernowitz or Strojinet. Shmuel was a son of
Chaim Menczer, one of 5 surviving children (Chaim, Chaya Clara, Dr.
Simon, Dr. Jona). We know that Shmuel died in the Holocaust, but do
not know the date. We know that after Yocheved's death in about 1938,
he remarried - but do not know the second wife's name.
The Menczer-Menczel family were merchants and some were land owners or farmers.
Yocheved was the daughter of Rabbi Yaakov-Yankel Kahane, born in
Kitav, Kolomea in 1858. He had been a talmid chacham, became a rich
wood merchant, and then left it all to become a Rav, in Sadgora, in
Vishnitz, and then in Chernowitz. He died in 1934.
Yankel's parents, Avraham Yosef and Chana Gittel Kahane came to
Palestine and died here, in 1894 and 1897 respectively. They are
buried on the Mount of Olives.
Most of the Menczer-Menczel and Kahane families perished in the
Holocaust, mainly in Transnistria. Some survivors are in Israel, and
some in the USA-Canada.
There is a lot more to the family story, but there are many unknowns,
which we are trying to learn.
