Dear Czernowitzers,
I recently wrote to Prof. Kalman Weiser, one of the organizers of the
proposed Yiddish conference "Czernowitz at 100: The First Yiddish Language
conference in Historical Perspective."
According to Prof. Weiser the conference, funding pending is planned for
mid-April 2008 at York University in Toronto Canada and not in Chernivtsi.
Nor is there any indication that this will be a conference intended for
Czernowitzer "Amchu", rather it is an academic conference, even though
many of us might find the themes to be covered interesting.
According to Prof. Weiser, the general themes to be covered
Will include:
personalities involved (Peretz, Birnbaum, Zhitlovsky, Mieses,
Prylucki);
Yiddish and Yiddishist culture and politics, ca. 1908 (Yiddish and the
nation-state, Yiddishism as a cultural ideology, Yiddish literary
criticism, the rise of a Yiddish press); and Czernowitz as a
cultural-political site (Jewish nationalism in Bukowina; Jewish
political culture in Bukowina, Jewish poets and artists from
Czernowitz).
Best regards,
Mimi
