Czernowitzers:

I'm taking the liberty of sending along the thoughts of Christian Her=
mann
on the gravestone issue reported on by Hardy.

--------------------------------------------

Dear Jerome, dear Bruce,

Hardy discovered pictures of old gravestones at Gruss aua Czernowitz =

website. If it´s true what the photographer writes that the ston=
es will be
"thrown away", it would be a scandal.

I think that somebody who can speak for the mailing list or is alread=
y
known in the administration should mail an request to the Chernivtsi =

municipal administration. As somebody who worked for an municipal =

administration himself, I know how administrations treat general requ=
ests
on history. They will always say they are not able to judge it and ar=
e not
responsible.

But in an concrete case they have to react.
So this could be questions to the administration:

1. Does the administration know about the stones?
2. Does the administration know about the origin and history of the s=
tones?
3. Are the stones protected by any Ukrainian laws for the protection =
of
monuments?
4. What does the administration intend to do for protecting and prese=
rving
the stones?

Please excuse my miserable English,
Christian
