Hi David,
The location is intersection Turkengasse -Springbrunnengasse were they
are building the new Turkish fountain square.
From the bridge , on both sides , stairs lead down to the square .
These stairs are very old and in the condition of the Turkish period.
Now they are going to build new stairs. The tombstones were serving
as steps of the stairs, people were stepping on them for years without
being aware.
If they stand on graves or have been brought there is not so clear.
I understand that this place served as a catholic cemetery time ago.
The current Jewish cemetery is a relatively new project (just 150 years
old).
As Jews lived and died in Czernowitz since the town was founded
Jews are probable buried all over the Judenstadt.
They got us out of the place , but whenever you scratch the soil and blow
off
the dust ,we are there.
Believe me , there is no way the can remove our memory.
Our ancestors stand us by.
Hardy
