Dear Carol,
Your grandmother's journals sound absolutely fascinating. I would very much
like to read them if you ever get them translated. And the pictures sound
interesting too.
I would be interested to know where in the Bukowina your grandmother was
born? Am I correct in supposing that she moved from the farm to the city at
some time? This was I think a very common pattern, certainly among Jewish
families at that period. My own family lived in Eisenau in the south
Bukowina (now Prisaca Dornei), they moved to Cz sometime round about the end
of WW1. Unfortunately I don't know much of the detailed family history from
that time, but I do gather that it was fairly complicated on account of the
war. Troop movements affected people's lives greatly at that time.
Your grandmother's journals would help to illuminate life in the Bukowina at
a complex and interesting period, on which I feel that rather little
information has survived.
Best regards,
David
