The main reason for this was that couples got married under the Jewish law
many years before they bothered having the administrative (city/region)
marriage certificates. The children born meanwhile appeared therefore to
have a mother but no official father and were named after their mother's
original last name. I have many examples in my family.

Let me also join others in acknowledging the sad passing away of the
prominent Zvi Yaavetz, one of the most noble humanitarians in Israel.
